Style overview

Glitch hop fits fractured sound design onto a hip-hop skeleton: a half-time groove at 85–110 BPM, snare on beat three, and a thick low end with real sub content. Chops, bit-crushed hits and buffer repeats are placed in the gaps between drums, so the track reads as complex while staying easy to nod to. Busier than hip-hop, far more grounded than pure glitch.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Written at 85–110 BPM with a half-time feel. Some producers notate the same groove at 170–220 BPM, but the perceived pulse stays slow.
Time signature: Half-time 4/4: kick on one, snare pushed to beat three, and the space between them packed with sliced sixteenth and thirty-second material.
Instrumentation: A heavy sub bass holds the bottom, the midrange is chopped samples, bit-crushed percussion and granular textures, with a clean electric piano or pad occasionally supplying harmonic reference.
Vocals: Either full rap verses, or the voice reduced to syllables used percussively — and often both approaches trade places inside the same track.
Song structure: Moves in eight-bar units: state the groove, thicken the chopping, return to the plain pattern. Contrast comes from edit density rather than from melody.

Use cases

Street-dance practice and battle tracks, where the chops line up with hits and freezes
Action-sports edits that cut on rhythmic breaks
Walk-on and highlight-reel music for esports and tech events
Streetwear short-form advertising
Mechanical and cyber-themed game levels

FAQ

What separates glitch hop from ordinary hip-hop?: The treatment of the midrange. Regular hip-hop keeps its samples intact and rides the groove and the vocal. Glitch hop shreds the same material and rebuilds it, filling the gaps between drum hits with bit reduction and buffer repeats. Same skeleton, entirely different texture density.
Which BPM should I actually write?: Write 85–110 BPM and say half-time. If the result comes back too fast, closer to drum and bass, add 'snare on beat three, slow overall swing' rather than simply lowering the number — the feel instruction does more work than the tempo value.
The edits are burying the groove. How do I fix that?: Protect the drums. Ask that kick and snare stay unprocessed and that fragments appear only between the two main hits, then lengthen the sub-bass notes. The dense texture then hangs on the groove instead of swallowing it. Give the sub notes a slow decay so the bottom stays continuous underneath.
