Style overview

Big beat is the coarse breakbeat dance music that surfaced in 1990s Britain: distorted rock guitar and psychedelic samples pressed into drum loops mixed so heavy they nearly break up. It is loud, brutal in its dynamics and openly swaggering, and it became the most-used electronic language in advertising and action scoring of its decade.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Mostly 110–135 BPM — slower than most dance music but hitting harder
Time signature: A 4/4 breakbeat groove with kick and snare compressed to the limit and audible dynamic squash
Instrumentation: Distorted guitar riffs, vintage synths, old-record samples and fragments of brass, all deliberately aged and driven into saturation
Vocals: Mostly shouted sample phrases or short slogan-like repeats, treated roughly and sometimes pushed through a megaphone character
Song structure: Riff-driven with sharp contrast between sections, frequently stripping everything away midway before slamming back in

FAQ

How is it different from ordinary breakbeat?: Force and timbre. Ordinary breakbeat prizes the ingenuity of the groove; big beat prizes the weight of the impact — drums compressed to their limit, distorted guitar riffs, samples aged on purpose. It expresses energy the way rock does, using electronic means.
How do I get that sense of size?: Ask for "heavily compressed drums, distorted guitar riff, saturated vintage samples, strong dynamic contrast, everything stripped mid-track before slamming back." Compression and distortion are the crucial requests; leave them out and you get clean breaks with no weight.
What should I watch for in advertising use?: The low-mid range is extremely full and voiceover buries easily. For an ad version, ask for midrange space left for the voice, or prepare an alternate mix with the guitar layer removed, or the mix stage becomes difficult.
