Style overview

Glitch treats digital failure as raw material: buffer stutters, dropped frames, bit-crushed samples and quantization error, all written into the rhythm itself. Drums frequently sit off the grid, note lengths are uneven, and the effect is of a signal interrupted and spliced back together. Tempo is not fixed, typically 100–140 BPM, because the point is texture and unpredictable rupture.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: No standard. Most tracks fall between 100 and 140 BPM, and some abandon a fixed tempo entirely, using ramps and stalls to unsettle the pulse.
Time signature: Nominally 4/4, deliberately broken. Notes are chopped into thirty-second fragments or smaller, accents fall off the grid, and bars of 5/4 or 7/8 slip in.
Instrumentation: The material is damage itself — bit-crushed samples, disc-skip artifacts, buffer repeats, failed time-stretches — usually laid over a clean synth bass and pad that give the ear a reference point.
Vocals: Vocals, when present, are chopped to syllables or shorter and rearranged with granular and formant processing. Many tracks are instrumental and let fragmented timbres carry the melody.
Song structure: Loose. Density of texture replaces sectional development: one source is re-chopped again and again, each pass finer or sparser than the last.

Use cases

Transition stings for product launches and interface demos
Experimental film, data visualization and new-media exhibitions
In-game system-failure, intrusion and disconnection scenes
Runway segments that need rhythm to break rather than flow
Short-form video edits synced to deliberate visual stutter

FAQ

Is glitch the same as glitch hop?: No. Glitch is a sound-design and rhythmic approach that can abandon a steady pulse altogether. Glitch hop packs the same timbres into a half-time hip-hop groove with stable drums and a heavy low end. Prompt glitch for experimental work, glitch hop when the listener should be able to nod along.
How do I get real glitch character instead of added noise?: Describe the failure modes, not 'noise'. Ask for buffer stutters, bit reduction, sample-rate crushing, failed time-stretch tails and notes chopped to thirty-seconds. Those map onto processes a model can render; 'add glitch effects' usually returns a layer of hiss and nothing more.
It is chopped so hard the melody disappears. What now?: Leave one line intact. Keep the pad or bass unbroken and apply the slicing only to the upper layers. 'Low end and harmony continuous, slicing on lead and percussion only' restores enough continuity for the ear to follow. Reintroduce the slicing gradually once that line is clearly audible.
