- How does shoegaze differ from dream pop?
- The proportion of noise. Shoegaze pushes distortion and volume to the limit until noise itself is the subject and the melody has to be searched for. Dream pop keeps a legible pop melody with thick reverb but far less grit. Shoegaze is the wall; dream pop is the fog.
- Why is it called shoegaze?
- Because performing required constant operation of large pedalboards, keeping players' eyes fixed downward at their feet all night. The term began as a jab and became the official name, which incidentally tells you how central the effects chain is to the style.
- How do I build that wall when generating?
- Prompt "multiple layered distorted guitars, flanger and tremolo, heavy reverb and delay, vocal mixed low and drenched." The word that matters is layered — shoegaze thickness comes from multiple guitar tracks interfering with each other, and no single track, however heavy, produces the same texture.
