Style overview

Darkwave is the coldest branch of post-punk and new wave. Guitars retreat to the margins, synthesizers and drum machines take over the texture, harmony parks in minor, and reverb and delay push everything a long way back. Vocals arrive either low and nearly spoken or high and disembodied, but never loud. Where gothic rock has a band's theatricality, darkwave works through cold and emptiness — an interior, withdrawn kind of dark.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: 85–130 BPM; the slow end walks, the fast end has a dance foundation but never sprints
Time signature: Mostly 4/4 with a drum machine repeating a fixed pattern and almost no fills; snare on two and four under a long reverb tail, kick often reduced to the downbeats
Instrumentation: Pads and arpeggiators form the body, with a synth bass or sustained low chords driving; where guitar appears it plays cold single notes through flanger and delay; drum sounds stay deliberately electronic with no attempt at a live kit
Vocals: Two archetypes — a low, nearly spoken male delivery, or a high, disembodied female line — both pushed deep into reverb. Lyrics deal in alienation, insomnia, religion and death, and almost never raise their voice
Song structure: Cyclic with few peaks, advancing by layering textures in and out; intros run long and the chorus is frequently the same phrase under different instrumentation

Use cases

Low-pressure passages in psychological thrillers and mystery drama, where unease is wanted but shock is not
Dark-aesthetic fashion film and looping beds for exhibitions and installations
Exploration scenes in horror and puzzle games, since it survives long loops without fatiguing
Transitional stretches at Halloween and dark-themed events, where metal would be too loud
Brand visuals that need to read cold rather than frightening

FAQ

Darkwave or gothic rock?: Look at the lineup. Gothic rock is a band: driving bass, strummed guitar, a human drummer and a theatrical vocal. Darkwave swaps that for synthesizers and a drum machine, with guitar either absent or reduced to single notes, and the voice held down in level. The first is gloom with a stage; the second is gloom behind a closed door.
How does it relate to post-punk?: Darkwave splits off from post-punk and keeps its coldness and repetition, but drops most of the guitar interplay and moves the weight onto synth texture and spatial processing. Think of it as post-punk turned electronic and turned inward: more mechanical rhythm, more closed-off mood.
How do I keep the output from turning into synth-pop?: The gear is nearly identical; the temperament is opposite. Specify 'minor harmony throughout, no major-key chorus', 'restrained vocal level, no bright stacked harmonies', 'fixed drum-machine pattern with no claps' and 'long reverb and delay on every part'. Holding the tempo under 110 BPM makes results far more consistent.
