Style overview

Noise rock treats dissonance and loss of control as raw material: guitars pushed to extreme tones producing shrieking overtones and feedback, rhythms deliberately displaced, structures liable to collapse at any moment. It keeps the rock lineup while discarding the premise that music should please, building tension and impact out of noise itself.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Mostly 100–160 BPM with abrupt tempo shifts or stalls between sections
Time signature: 4/4 as a base but constantly interrupted; rests and displaced beats are standard tools
Instrumentation: Guitars carrying heavy distortion and feedback with piercing tone; thick distorted bass and violent drumming with no concern for tidiness
Vocals: Shouted, spoken or wholly mangled, with the voice functioning as another noise source
Song structure: Unstable — themes recur but noise passages interrupt without warning, and endings often stop dead inside the chaos

Use cases

Experimental film and avant-garde art projects
Horror and psychological thriller scoring
Underground and counterculture content
Sound design for installations
Short passages needing severe impact

FAQ

How does noise rock differ from metal?: Metal's heaviness is organized — riffs precise, rhythms locked, tone tight. Noise rock's heaviness is uncontrolled, deliberately retaining dissonance and displacement so structure can collapse at will. Metal pursues precision of force; noise rock pursues the dissolution of order.
How do I control how unpleasant it gets?: Name specific noise sources rather than asking vaguely: "guitar with feedback and piercing overtones, occasionally displaced rhythms, sudden rests between sections." Keep one recognizable melody or riff as an anchor — without any anchor you get pure noise rather than noise rock.
Does it have commercial uses?: Yes, but narrow ones: horror, experimental advertising, art projects — places where discomfort is the point. It suits nothing that needs pleasure or safety, so confirm the shock is the intended effect before committing.
