Style overview

Most music decides what to do with distortion. Noise decides that distortion is the piece. Feedback and broadband hiss occupy the whole spectrum at once, there is no pitch center and no beat, and the dynamic range flattens to something close to a straight line. Nothing accumulates toward a peak: the level is at the ceiling from the opening second and stays there, leaving a wall with no gaps in it. It is the least accommodating music going, and a standard well of material whenever film and games need collapse, overload or a threshold crossed.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: No beat and no pulse. The sense of time comes from changes in density and spectrum — one filter sweep or one sudden drop in level may be the only event in the entire piece
Time signature: No time signature and no loop whatsoever. Anything resembling rhythm is usually the runaway cycle of self-oscillating feedback rather than a written pattern
Instrumentation: The sources tend to be the distortion apparatus itself: chains of pedals wired into feedback loops, metal vibration picked up by contact microphones, overdriven circuitry, shortwave and electromagnetic pickup. Stacking EQ and distortion is the act of performance
Vocals: Instrumental in the main. Where a voice appears it is distorted and compressed into the noise bed until only the contour of human utterance survives with no intelligible words, functionally just another saturated source
Song structure: Two extremes. One holds a constant broadband wall that barely changes across an entire piece; the other splices in blocks, switching level and timbre wholesale with no warning. Neither uses crescendo or climax

Use cases

Screen and game moments depicting system collapse, sensory overload or the ringing after a blast
Live sound for contemporary art exhibitions and performance, where volume and density act on the body directly
Raw material for sound design, yielding a great range of unreal timbres once slowed and filtered
Experimental shorts and hard-cut transitions, where a few seconds of noise creates rupture
Concert and video content for the extreme end of the live music scene

FAQ

Is noise the same thing as noise rock?: No. Noise rock is still a band: guitar, bass and drums playing rhythms and sections, only with abrasive tone and structures that can fall apart. Pure noise has no lineup and no rhythm, its sources are the distortion devices themselves, and an entire piece may be one unchanging broadband wall. Choose noise rock if you want something you can nod to, noise if you want the pressure itself.
How does it relate to experimental?: One is material, the other is method. Noise names a specific sonic result — broadband, saturated, unpitched. Experimental names a way of working: set up an uncontrolled process, which may end up deafening or nearly silent. Noise pieces are frequently experimental as well; the reverse does not follow.
Any practical cautions when generating and using it?: Two. First, monitoring level: the dynamic range here is extremely narrow, and sustained loud listening carries real hearing risk, so work quietly and keep audition passes short. Second, mastering headroom: noise material already sits near full scale, so leave at least 6 dB before dropping it into a film mix, or it will clip the moment other stems join it.
