Style overview

A drone piece hands you one thing and asks you to stay with it: a single sustained tone or cluster, sounding from the first second to the last, with no progression, no melody and no pulse anywhere in it. What moves is not the music but your position inside it — beating between barely detuned partials, overtones swelling and thinning under a filter, timbre thickening by degrees. It rewards attention that stops following and starts looking in.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: No pulse, and no tempo to speak of. Time is carried by motion inside the timbre — the beat frequency between two detuned tones, a few cycles per second, is the only rhythm the style has
Time signature: No time signature, no bars, no loop. A whole piece can be one unbroken sustained tone, in which entrance and decay are the only two events
Instrumentation: Anything that can hold indefinitely: bowed low strings and bowed cymbals, the continuous air of a harmonium or accordion, stacked sine and saw oscillators, guitar sustained with an e-bow or controlled feedback. Microtonal detuning generates the beating, and a filter creeps across the overtone region
Vocals: Instrumental in the main. Where voices are used they hold multi-tracked breathless long tones that fuse into the mass as one more overtone layer, with no words and no melodic contour
Song structure: No form, or rather the form is the life of one tone: entrance, sustain, internal change, decay. Every development happens at the level of timbre and overtone while the harmonic floor stays fixed, and pieces routinely exceed ten minutes

Use cases

Long-running beds for installations and gallery rooms, where the listener changes the sound by walking through it
Extended shots depicting suspended time, blurred consciousness or a threshold state
A fixed auditory anchor for meditation and body-scan practice
The electronic counterpart to singing-bowl and sound-healing content
Experimental shorts that must sustain a single tension with no sectional change permitted

FAQ

What separates drone from minimalism?: Minimalism has a pulse and recognizable cells, and its change comes from those cells phasing apart or accumulating note by note — a process built to be heard. Drone has neither pulse nor pattern; it does not move at all, and its information lives inside the timbre. Put simply: minimalism is displacement within repetition, drone is breathing within stillness.
And drone versus ambient?: Ambient carries several layers of texture and drifts harmonically — pads change chords and shift color over time. Drone holds one pitch center and never leaves it. The moment you hear the harmony move, you are listening to ambient, not drone.
How do I stop the system adding a chord progression?: State stasis as a hard condition: "single sustained tone, no chord changes at any point, no harmonic progression, no melody, no drums, no sections." Then supply where the internal movement should come from: "beating between two slightly detuned tones, filter creeping across the overtones, faint amplitude fluctuation." The bare word drone almost always returns a pad with chords in it.
