- How do I separate heavy metal from hard rock?
- Tone and subject. Hard rock keeps blues roots, warmer tone and worldly subjects. Heavy metal runs tighter and colder, builds riffs from modal rather than blues material, turns to epic and fantasy themes and pitches the vocal higher. Hard rock is rock at its extreme; heavy metal established its own vocabulary.
- How do I prompt for twin guitar harmony?
- Write "twin guitars harmonizing in parallel thirds, solos traded between two guitars." It is the most identifiable arranging device in the style, and asking only for "metal" usually returns a single guitar track without that grandeur.
- What should I specify for the vocal?
- Write "soaring clean vocal, wide range, chest voice with head voice." The heavy metal tradition is singing rather than screaming — growls belong to more extreme subgenres. If you want a melody people can sing along to, explicitly rule out growled delivery.
