- How does it differ from doom metal?
- By what it is after. Doom pursues weight itself, with minimal structure, riffs repeated many times over and rough production. Gothic metal pursues atmosphere and melody, with a singable chorus, an organ-and-string harmonic layer and a polished mix. Both are slow: one crushes, the other envelops.
- How do I prompt the clean-and-harsh vocal pairing?
- Write clean female lead carries the melody, male growls appear only at section turns and in the bridge, and the two never share the lead line. Left unspecified, systems tend to stack both at once and neither reads clearly.
- How do I keep it from becoming symphonic metal?
- Control the scale and role of the orchestra. Gothic metal uses organ, piano and string pads for space, never independent orchestral themes or a full choir tutti. It helps to write strings as harmonic bed only, no brass, no choir.
