- Is free jazz just playing whatever you like?
- No. What is cancelled is the prearranged harmony and form; the rules of interaction remain — who enters, who gives way, when density accumulates, who stops first. The audible organization comes from real-time response. Prompting “collective improvisation, voices yielding in turn, density built in three waves then thinned out” yields far more structure than asking for atonality.
- How is it different from free improvisation or noise?
- Free jazz keeps the jazz instrumentation and the jazz way of breathing: saxophone phrases still carry traces of swing articulation, and bass and drums are still in dialogue. Fully de-instrumented electronic noise belongs elsewhere. Keeping “acoustic jazz lineup” in the prompt is what stops the style drifting.
- Results come out either too tidy or completely shapeless.
- Give an energy curve instead of harmony: “first twenty seconds bowed bass and cymbals only, saxophone enters and gradually overblows, everything peaks at ninety seconds, then a hard stop leaving drums alone.” The form lives on the intensity timeline, and specifying it is what holds the take together.
