- Where exactly does avant-garde part company with experimental?
- In the frame of reference. Avant-garde needs something to break — it is a stance toward a tradition, and the work is usually still written down, rehearsed and performed, with the formal rules rewritten. Experimental is a stance toward outcome: set up conditions that generate sound and accept what they produce, with no notation required. Write avant-garde when you want the feel of rules being broken, experimental when you want the feel of a process running loose.
- Is avant-garde the same as modern classical?
- They overlap without matching. Modern classical is a period category covering recent art music, much of which still uses traditional forms and tonal writing. Avant-garde is its most radical strand, defined by the intent to break convention. Ask for modern classical if you want contemporary string-quartet writing; ask for avant-garde if you want extended techniques and extreme contrast.
- How do I stop generations turning into horror scoring?
- The usual cause is a prompt made only of mood words. Replace them with compositional detail: "overpressure bowing and playing behind the bridge, wind multiphonics, extreme dynamic contrast, silences of ten seconds or more between blocks, no tonal center." The silence and the dynamic contrast do most of the work — horror scoring relies on sustained tension, avant-garde on abrupt rupture, and naming that difference separates the two.
