Style overview

Drill is defined by what it withholds. The tempo is quick at 138–150 BPM, yet almost nothing fills it: the hats leave gaps, the melody shrinks to two or three notes circling in a minor key, and there is no pad holding them up. The rapping refuses release, staying low and level in contour so the pressure never resolves into a chorus. It came out of the South Side of Chicago using the same equipment as trap, read colder and emptier.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Generally 138–150 BPM, sitting between full-time and half-time depending on how busy the hats get
Time signature: 4/4 with the snare on three, usually trailing a short drag roll, kicks grouped in triplet-leaning figures, and hats alternating triplets and sixteenths while leaving plenty of air
Instrumentation: A dark synth lead — bell, pluck or organ-like — playing a two or three note minor motif, deep 808, plain claps and hats; the arrangement rarely exceeds four layers
Vocals: Rapped low in the register, flat in contour, with almost no sung hook; ad-libs are used sparingly and rarely run longer than a word or two
Song structure: The hook loop runs throughout, alternating eight-bar hooks with sixteen-bar verses; intros commonly let the melodic motif play alone for four bars before the drums enter

Use cases

Crime and thriller scoring, where the cold character and steady tension sit under scene without competing
Hard-edged sportswear advertising that wants drive without emotional persuasion
Competitive gaming and esports backing, where tension needs to hold at a constant level
Night-city footage, since the dark motif matches the grade rather than fighting it
Instrumentals for rappers, because the open arrangement and clean midrange leave obvious room for a vocal

FAQ

What is the actual difference between drill and trap drums?: Density and centre of gravity. Trap keeps the hats busy, syncopates the kick heavily and carries a lot of information. Drill subtracts: hats leave gaps, the snare on three trails a short drag roll, and kicks group into triplet-leaning figures. Prompt “sparse drums, snare on three with a drag roll, hats leaving space” and it separates cleanly from trap.
How simple should the melody be?: Simpler than feels comfortable. Two or three notes in a minor scale, looping unchanged for the whole track, and no chord progression at all. Write “melody uses three notes only, minor key, bell or pluck timbre, unchanged throughout.” Any real harmonic movement slides the track back into ordinary dark trap.
How should I specify the vocal?: Ask for “low register, flat contour, minimal pitch movement, no sung hook, short clipped ad-libs.” The tension in this style comes from restraint, so prompting for “powerful” or “passionate” delivery reliably produces the wrong thing. Add “dry vocal, short reverb” to keep the mix in character.
