Style overview

Everything in trap is written at one speed and heard at another: sessions run 130–150 BPM while the backbeat lands only on three, so a record feels half as fast as it is. Two signatures fill that space — an 808 that glides between pitches instead of restriking, and hi-hats that keep changing rate, dropping triplet and thirty-second rolls between the sixteenths. Melody stays down to a short minor motif on bells or plucks, and the vocal arrives buried in ad-libs, with the hook usually opening the record.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Written at 130–150 BPM, felt in half-time around 65–75; some producers simply write at 70 and use sixteenth-note hats
Time signature: Half-time 4/4 with snare or clap only on three, a densely syncopated kick, and sixteenth-note hats broken up by triplet and thirty-second rolls
Instrumentation: Gliding long-decay 808, bells, plucks, synth flute and dark string motifs, layered claps and rising noise sweeps; the arrangement stays open and lets low end and hats carry the density
Vocals: Rapped, frequently in triplet flow, with heavy ad-lib stacking panned wide and a tuned sung hook; the lead sits forward and is compressed tight
Song structure: Hook first, then hook–verse–hook–verse–hook; the final section often runs a beat switch that replaces the loop outright, or exits on a solo 808

Use cases

Streetwear and sneaker content, where the low-end impact and the density of sync points match fast cutting
Strength training playlists, since the half-time pulse holds a steady drive over a long session
Short-form edits, because 808 glides and hat rolls supply far more alignable events than a straight beat
Sports highlight packages and trailers, where a beat switch maps onto a change of scene
Mid-set club and party programming that needs weight without pushing the tempo up

FAQ

How do I get the 808 to actually glide?: Ask for it by mechanism: “808 gliding between pitches with portamento, long decay, allowed to overlap the kick.” That glide is the single most identifying trait of trap low end — an 808 without it is just a synth bass. If the bottom sounds cluttered, add “monophonic 808, no second bass layer.”
Why do my hi-hats sound flat?: No variation in rate. Write “sixteenth-note hats as the base, a triplet or thirty-second roll every two bars, rolls crescendo into the next downbeat.” Trap hats are not uniformly busy; they alternate between dense and sparse, and that contrast is where the momentum comes from.
How do I keep trap and drill separate?: Similar tempo, different engine. In trap the 808 punches syncopated hits alongside the kick while the snare holds three. In drill the 808 slides continuously and writes its own rhythmic line, becoming the main source of groove while the kit thins out. For drill, prompt “sliding 808 carrying the groove, sparse drums, dark simple melody.”
