Style overview

Grime emerged around 2000 out of east London pirate radio culture. The tempo is locked at 140 BPM, the beats are cold and skeletal, and a monophonic square or saw lead hammers the same short phrase while the sub drops only at chosen points. Over it sits fast, hard-consonant British rap. The eight-bar handover between MCs on air shaped the form itself: the space in the arrangement exists so the words can land.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Locked to 140 BPM with almost no variation and counted straight rather than in half-time, so the rapping and the drums share one fixed grid
Time signature: 4/4 with kick and snare arranged in tight syncopation, the snare on 2 and 4 plus a 16th-note answer; no swing at all, rigid and hard
Instrumentation: A monophonic square or saw lead carries the melody, deliberately cheap and dry, supported by clipped sine sub, metallic percussion and gunshot or siren stings
Vocals: Rapid, heavily accented British rap, generally in eight-bar rounds; hooks are a single line shouted repeatedly
Song structure: Eight bars is the unit of everything, with the lead patch swapping at bar 16 or 32 and an instrumental passage reserved for MCs to trade verses

Use cases

Backing tracks for rap and clash content, where eight-bar cycles suit taking turns
Fast cuts over street basketball, skating and competitive short video
City sequences in British street drama and games
Hard-edged streetwear advertising, since the square lead is instantly recognisable
Interval blocks in boxing and conditioning sessions that need menace

FAQ

Both grime and dubstep run at 140. What separates them?: How the drums are counted. Dubstep is half-time with the snare on beat three, wide space and long reverb. Grime counts straight, puts the snare on 2 and 4, packs in more hits and keeps everything dry. Grime is also vocal-led, with the beat clearing room for words, while dubstep hands the lead to the low end.
How do I keep the instrumental from filling up?: Make emptiness an explicit requirement: 140 BPM, monophonic square lead, sub only on beat one and after beat three, all mid-range left clear apart from the lead, reverb under 0.6 seconds. Then add leave mid-range space for a rapper, and the model stops layering pads.
How do I get the lead to sound that cold?: Avoid anything warm. Call for square or pulse waves, no chorus, near-instant attack with a very short release, slight detune but no stereo widening. Ask for the lead in mono and centred with a short plate. The closer it sounds to a cheap early hardware synth, the better it fits.
