- Crunk and trap are both Southern. Where do they separate?
- Different purposes produce different settings. Trap cares about 808 glides, hat rolls and individual flow; it is made to be listened to. Crunk strips all of that, hammers one synth figure and replaces the solo vocal with a group chant, because it is made to be shouted along with. Prompt “unison group chant hook, horn-like synth stabs, simple hats, no 808 glides” and it will not drift into trap.
- How do I get a hook that a crowd would actually chant?
- Three specifics. First, “hook is a four to eight syllable phrase repeated at least six times.” Second, “group vocals in unison, no harmony, single pitch.” Third, “hype man answers with one or two words at the end of each line.” Chanting works through alignment, not vocal skill, so asking for “choral harmonies” gives you the wrong thing entirely.
- The arrangement feels monotonous. What can I add?
- Nothing — change dynamics instead. Write “every eight bars, mute the low end and drums for two beats leaving only the chant, then everything re-enters together.” Movement here comes from cutting things out, not from adding layers; extra melodic parts dilute the directness the style depends on.
