Style overview

Psytrance runs on a rolling bass: each beat is divided into four sixteenths, the kick takes the first and the bass fires the remaining three, locking the two into a machine that keeps tumbling forward. Tempos sit at 140–148 BPM, the lead is usually a filter-modulated squelch that sounds close to speech, and effects pan hard across the stereo field. It feels like a tunnel that never stops accelerating.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Mostly 140–148 BPM, up to 150 on the full-on side; the tempo is absolutely fixed, since the propulsion comes from the kick-and-bass interlock
Time signature: 4/4 four-on-the-floor divided into four sixteenths per beat: kick on the first, bass on the other three, with hats on the offbeat eighths and percussion filling the sixteenth grid
Instrumentation: A short sub and a tight kick form the engine, while the lead is a filter-modulated squelch or an FM patch; flanged and delayed effects sweep the stereo image and pads appear only in breaks
Vocals: Normally instrumental. The convention is a spoken sample lifted from film or documentary narration, repeated at the break to mark the section rather than to carry a tune
Song structure: Advances in 32-bar blocks: engine, lead entry, a break that strips the bass to pads and a spoken sample, then full speed again, with the peak after the second break

Use cases

Outdoor forest parties and all-night stages
The hard intervals of trail running and long rides
Live projection sets with sci-fi or psychedelic visuals
Fast-cut extreme sports edits
Chase sequences and boss fights in games

FAQ

Why does the bass roll like that?: Because kick and bass share the same four sixteenths in every beat: the kick occupies the first, the bass plays the other three, and the bass is deeply sidechained to the kick. Writing “four sixteenths per beat, kick on the first, bass on the remaining three, bass sidechained to the kick” is far more precise than asking for a rolling bass.
Psytrance or goa trance?: Goa is the earlier form, with longer arrangements, more layers and several acid lines stacked in Eastern-flavoured scales. Psytrance narrows the focus to the kick-bass engine and one squelch lead, and its mix is cleaner and tighter at the bottom. Ask for stacked acid lines if you want goa, and for the engine plus effects if you want psy.
The low end comes back muddy.: Request that the kick keep its fundamental at 50–60 Hz, that the bass be high-passed at 40 Hz and sidechained, and that the two never sound at the same instant. Clean low end in this genre is purely a matter of timing, and “kick and bass never overlap” is the single most useful line in the prompt.
