Style overview

Dark psy pushes psytrance into the 150–190 BPM range and swaps the palette for its shadow side: sharp, distorted timbres and samples chopped into tiny fragments packed at high density, with almost no room left for harmony or melody. It develops by getting denser rather than higher — more layers, finer subdivisions, unrelenting pressure — and lives mainly on outdoor stages after midnight.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Commonly 150–190 BPM, with some tracks above 200; the tempo is extreme, yet the low end still lands once per beat so the pulse stays trackable
Time signature: 4/4 four-on-the-floor with bass and percussion filling the thirty-second grid; accents shift unpredictably, producing a permanent sense of being off balance
Instrumentation: A distorted kick and a tense sub underneath, leads built from FM and wavetable synthesis with a metallic edge, and mids packed with time-stretched, reversed and granulated samples
Vocals: Effectively none. Pitched-down, distorted speech fragments or vocal groans are cut to a few dozen milliseconds and deployed as percussion hits
Song structure: There are no melodic sections: effect layers are swapped every 16 bars while density climbs continuously, with perhaps one two-bar silence as the only pause

Use cases

Post-midnight stages at outdoor parties
Horror games and thriller sequences
Live scoring for experimental film and dark visuals
High-intensity fight and competition edits
Halloween and other dark-themed events

FAQ

How does dark psy relate to psytrance?: It is the fast, dark branch: the same kick-bass engine and four-on-the-floor frame, but at 150–190 BPM with the bright lead removed and replaced by distorted metallic tone and dense chopping. Give a high BPM, minor second or tritone intervals, and an explicit “no bright melody” to get there.
How does anything stay audible at that speed?: Keep the low end simple and the top end complex. Ask for “monophonic bass, two hits per beat, all chopped effects high-passed above 800 Hz” and reserve a band for the kick. The faster the tempo, the fewer low-frequency events you can afford before the whole thing collapses into noise.
How do I describe dark timbre in a way that works?: Use synthesis terms: “high FM modulation index, randomised wavetable scan position, metallic noise layer,” and name the intervals — “lead built around minor seconds and tritones.” Words like eerie or sinister carry no executable information; intervals and modulation settings do.
