Style overview

Nu-disco rebuilds disco's frame with modern club production. The four-on-the-floor kick stays, but the low end is sidechained so it breathes with every kick, strings and vocals often arrive as filtered loops rather than live takes, and the bassline — played or programmed — keeps moving through the low mids. It is more restrained than disco and more melodic than house, and its sections are laid out the way a DJ actually uses them: intro, build, breakdown, drop back in.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: 110–125 BPM, with most releases sitting at 118–122
Time signature: 4/4, four-on-the-floor, hats opening on the offbeat and claps layered on two and four; sidechain compression against the kick gives the whole track an audible pump
Instrumentation: Synth or played electric bass running continuous sixteenths, analog-voiced pads and electric piano holding harmony, strings and horns usually appearing as filtered loops; guitar keeps its syncopated chords but heavily compressed
Vocals: Vocals are frequently chopped, filtered or pitch-shifted and used as rhythmic material; full topline performances exist too, but sit further back than disco would allow, level with the instruments
Song structure: Club architecture: an eight- to sixteen-bar intro, layers entering one at a time, a breakdown that pulls the kick and leaves pads and vocal, the drop back to the full arrangement, and a drum-only outro left open for mixing

Use cases

Mid-evening club and bar programming: more tune than house, less spectacle than disco
Fashion brand films and runway finales
Lifestyle advertising for cars and consumer technology
Stream intros and podcast transitions, since the regular structure trims cleanly to a fixed length
Any project that wants a retro feel but has to meet contemporary mix standards

FAQ

Disco or nu-disco — how do I tell them apart?: Listen to the low end and the space. Disco fills the field with a live band and a string section and leaves no gaps; nu-disco sidechains the bass so it breathes with the kick and opens holes in the mids, with strings arriving as a filtered loop rather than a session. The tempos are close; the production logic is not.
Where is the line with house?: Nu-disco keeps singable chord progressions and a melodic bassline, and its sections still echo verse and chorus. House leans on loops and drum programming and is perfectly happy on a single chord. Adding 'clear chord progression and melodic bassline' to a prompt pushes the output toward nu-disco.
How do I get a DJ-usable arrangement?: Write the map in bars: '16-bar intro of drums and filtered chords, bass enters at bar 33, breakdown drops the kick at bar 65, full drop at bar 81', and ask for 'a 16-bar drum-only outro'. Without that you get a song-shaped edit that is awkward to mix in and out of.
