Style overview

Neofolk emerged when European post-industrial musicians turned acoustic in the eighties. Arpeggiated or strummed acoustic guitar carries the body, set against a marching snare, a low declamatory male voice, struck bells and gongs, and a bass drone that never fully clears. The temperament is solemn, cold and ceremonial, and the writing reaches for European natural and ancient imagery — woods, ash, rivers, a season turning. The instruments are acoustic; the mood is inherited from post-punk.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Mostly 60–100 BPM with a steady march that never accelerates; ceremonial passages can fall below 50
Time signature: Mostly 4/4 with every beat accented to build the march; slow 3/4 and 6/8 sways appear, and the meter rarely changes between sections
Instrumentation: Arpeggiated and strummed acoustic guitar at the core, with marching snare and timpani, bells, gongs, accordion and harmonium; synthesizers appear only to hold the low drone and shape the space
Vocals: A male voice in the low register, closer to declamation than to singing, with almost no vibrato; choruses often become group unison or chant sitting under a large-hall reverb
Song structure: Repeating sections that accumulate layers, rarely with a conventional chorus; an instrumental prologue is common and the ending is reached by removing instruments one at a time

Use cases

Solemn passages in historical and medieval film and television
Camp and winter scenes in strategy and survival games
Forest, moorland and season-change footage in nature documentary
Exhibition and installation spaces that require stillness and ceremony
Backing for cold-toned photography and photo-text work

FAQ

How does neofolk differ from Nordic folk?: One is a tradition, the other an authored style. Nordic folk rests on genuinely transmitted tunes and instruments — nyckelharpa, polska meters — where melody and rhythm both have a traceable source. Neofolk is a post-eighties authored genre descended from post-punk and post-industrial music, built on acoustic guitar, marching snare and low drone; its ancient imagery is a borrowed aesthetic rather than an inherited repertoire.
What prompt language produces the solemnity?: Be explicit about three layers. Rhythm: "marching snare, accent on every beat, no acceleration anywhere." Voice: "low male register, close to declamation, no vibrato." Space: "large-hall reverb over a continuous low drone." Drop the drone and the result reverts to ordinary acoustic guitar folk.
My result comes back too warm and too lyrical — what do I cut?: Two things: bright high-register guitar melody, and third-based harmony. Replace them with "guitar arpeggios only, harmony in open fifths, no harmonica or fiddle." Neofolk's chill comes from hollow intervals and restrained scoring, so adding instruments only warms it back up.
