Style overview

Latin jazz keeps jazz harmony and jazz soloing but stands them on Caribbean and Brazilian rhythm. On the Afro-Cuban side, everything is measured against clave, a two-bar rhythmic key: piano plays a montuno, bass plays a syncopated tumbao, and congas, bongos and timbales stack into layers. On the Brazilian side, samba and bossa syncopation does the same job. Eighth notes are straight, and the swing comes from percussion parts pulling against one another.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Afro-Cuban tunes mostly 150–220 BPM; bossa-based material at 110–140 BPM; slow bolero settings at 70–90 BPM
Time signature: Written in 4/4 but counted in two-bar units; a 3-2 or 2-3 son clave fixes where the accents fall and every part has to line up with it
Instrumentation: Piano montuno, bass tumbao, congas, bongos, timbales, cowbell and shaker, with trumpet and saxophone taking leads and short unison figures
Vocals: Largely instrumental. Where voices appear they alternate a lead with a Spanish-language coro answering in chorus; otherwise trumpet or saxophone is the lead voice, with the percussion thickening as a response during solos
Song structure: Head, rotating solos, a mambo section stacking unison horn figures, a percussion solo or open descarga, then the head again

Use cases

Dance classes and social dance nights, where the clave accents make partner timing legible
Summer drinks and outdoor brand advertising that needs a tropical setting established in seconds
Restaurant and terrace service hours, with groove that never rushes the table
City sequences in travel and food documentaries, where layered percussion gives the edit landing points
Fitness and dance short-form video, since anything above 150 BPM cuts cleanly in two-bar units

FAQ

What is clave and why does it belong in the prompt?: Clave is a two-bar, five-stroke rhythmic key in either 3-2 or 2-3 order, and it fixes where the accents of the whole piece land. Every part aligns to it, and getting the direction backwards makes the arrangement feel wrong. Writing “3-2 son clave, piano montuno and bass tumbao locked to the clave” is far more precise than asking for a Latin rhythm.
How is this different from salsa or bossa nova?: Salsa centers on singing and the dance floor, with horns writing short answering figures and little solo space. Bossa nova is quiet, guitar-syncopated and close-miked vocally. Latin jazz keeps extended improvisation and jazz harmony and treats those rhythms as chassis. If you want solos, this is the one.
The percussion comes out as mush.: Assign parts one instrument at a time: “congas on tumbao, bongos playing martillo between sections, timbales only on cascara and fills at section changes, cowbell entering at the mambo.” Asking for Latin percussion in general stacks every instrument together and flattens the layering.
