- How does fusion differ from funk and jazz funk?
- Jazz funk puts the groove first, keeps harmony relatively plain and stays short. Fusion puts harmonic complexity, odd meters and long solos first, and treats the groove as a vehicle. Ask for jazz funk when you want a pocket to dance in, fusion when you want an extended solo over 7/8.
- How do I stop the output swinging?
- Write “straight eighths, no swing feel” explicitly. It is the most commonly skipped instruction: the word jazz alone makes systems default to a swing lilt, which collapses the fusion skeleton. Pair it with “electric piano and synths, no acoustic piano.”
- What phrasing actually produces odd meters?
- Bind the meter to the section: “head in 7/8, interlude cuts to 4/4, solo section returns to 7/8 with one bar of 5/8 inserted every eight bars.” Asking for complex rhythm usually returns a muddled 4/4; naming bar counts is what produces changes you can actually count.
