Style overview

Dembow, in its Dominican sense, is the fast and hard branch of the Caribbean groove family: 115–130 BPM, drums roughly twice as dense as reggaeton, and a metallic snare striking the back half of every beat. Most tracks ride a single two-bar percussion loop from start to finish. Vocals arrive as short shouted phrases hammering one hook. The balance — short lows, loud mids — is tuned for outdoor sound systems, not headphones.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: 115–130 BPM as standard, pushing to 135 BPM on street-party cuts; below 110 BPM the feel slides back into reggaeton
Time signature: 4/4, kick on the downbeat and the back half of beat two, with the caja snare filling every offbeat in a continuous chatter and hats running sixteenths with doubled hits
Instrumentation: Built around one two-bar percussion loop — metallic snare, wood rim hits, bells, scraper — plus a synth motif or two and a very short sine bass that falls in pitch
Vocals: Shouted Spanish phrases with almost no breathing room, stacked doubles thrown at the ends of lines, and a slogan-style chorus repeated rather than harmonized
Song structure: Usually under two and a half minutes, into the main loop within four bars, sectioned by vocal entries and percussion layers dropping in and out, often ending on a hard cut

Use cases

Outdoor sound systems and street parties, where mid-range density carries
Peak-hour club sets that need more pressure than reggaeton provides
Dance challenges on short video, since the loop establishes itself in eight seconds
Interval training and gym content with no slack between beats
The accelerating section of a set moving from reggaeton toward electronic tempos

FAQ

Is dembow just faster reggaeton?: They share ancestry but not function. Reggaeton is a song form with harmonic padding underneath and space between hits. Dembow strips the harmony out, fills every offbeat with snare, and runs a loop plus shouted vocals for the whole track. It is written for a crowd in the street rather than for a listening room, and the tempo gap of twenty-plus BPM follows from that.
How do I get the snare right?: Describe the timbre and the placement together: “metallic snare hitting the back half of every beat, dry, short, no reverb.” This snare is almost completely untreated. Any long reverb smears the offbeats into each other and the forward push of the loop is lost.
How do I stop a two-bar loop from getting boring?: Vary density rather than harmony. Rotate bells, rim hits and claps in and out, remove one layer every eight bars and restore it, and use a short shouted phrase at the end of bar four as a percussion event. Adding chords or a pad to relieve the repetition pushes the track out of the genre entirely.
