- Which octave holds the energy. Dubstep concentrates weight at 40–60 Hz and creates pressure through space and reverb. Brostep moves the lead into distorted 200–2000 Hz wobble and fills nearly every gap. Stating mid-range distorted bass led or deep sub led in a prompt keeps the two from blurring together.
- How is the talking bass made?
- Formant filtering does the work. Run the distorted wobble through two or three band-pass filters imitating vowel resonances and sweep their centre frequencies between roughly 700 Hz and 1800 Hz with an LFO or envelope. Asking for formant sweeps, vowel-shaped resonant peaks, new shape every beat is more reliable than the phrase talking bass.
- How do I stop the drop from turning to mush?
- Give the patches a rota. Only one mid-range bass speaks at a time while other layers handle mono sub or high-end detail, and when you swap patches every bar or two keep the fundamental fixed and change only the harmonics. Sidechain the bass against the snare as well, since mush usually means both are holding the mids at once.
