- What separates uplifting from ordinary trance?
- Harmonic outlook and breakdown length. General trance is happy in minor keys with a short breakdown; uplifting almost always resolves to major, or moves from natural minor to its relative major, and gives the breakdown well over a minute to state the theme. Say “major key, long breakdown, solo piano theme” and it locks in.
- How do I write a melody that keeps rising?
- Use a four-bar phrase that ascends by step and lift its highest note one scale degree on each repetition, over a progression such as vi–IV–I–V. At the drop, transpose the whole line up an octave instead of rewriting it. The lift comes from register, not from new sounds.
- My results just sound loud and cluttered.
- Usually every layer is playing at full volume at once. Ask for “piano and pad only during the breakdown, all supersaws enter at the drop,” and allocate frequency ranges: bass 40–120 Hz, lead above 500 Hz, pads high-passed at 300 Hz. Separating the layers makes the drop feel bigger, not smaller.
