Style overview

Swing is jazz written for a dance floor. A band fifteen or so strong splits into reed, trumpet and trombone sections that trade written figures back and forth, while the rhythm section lays down an even four-to-the-bar pulse: guitar chunking on every beat, bass walking in quarters, hi-hat snapping on two and four. Solos exist, but they are slotted into an arrangement. The star is the ensemble and the way its sections answer one another.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Dance numbers sit at 140–200 BPM, medium swing at 120–140 BPM, ballads down at 70–100 BPM
Time signature: 4/4 with eighth notes played long-short; rhythm guitar chunks four to the bar, bass walks, hi-hat closes on two and four
Instrumentation: Five saxophones, four trumpets and four trombones scored in sections, over piano, rhythm guitar, upright bass and drums
Vocals: A featured singer fronts the band without fighting the brass, tapering phrase ends on breath; fully instrumental charts are just as common, with trumpet or tenor taking the lead voice
Song structure: Usually 32-bar AABA song form: ensemble head, solo choruses, a shout chorus with the full band in unison, then the head again

Use cases

Swing dance socials and retro balls, where a steady tempo supports six- and eight-count footwork
Wedding receptions and cocktail hours — enough ensemble body to fill a room without burying conversation
Film and stage work set between the wars, since sectional brass writing dates a scene on its own
Heritage brand films, which benefit from clearly marked eight-bar phrases for cutting
Seasonal retail atmospheres, where bright brass stays legible over crowd noise

FAQ

Is swing the same thing as big band?: Swing names a rhythmic feel and a period style; big band names an instrumentation and an approach to arranging. Nearly all swing is played by big bands, but big bands also play Latin charts, funk charts and modern non-swinging writing. Ask for swing when you want the dance-era lilt, big band when you want the weight of fifteen horns.
How do I keep a swing prompt from drifting into bebop?: Cap the tempo around 200 BPM, ask for a singable riff-based head, and say that written ensemble passages take up more room than solos. Bebop is a small group at double the speed with the melody folded into angular intervals; swing keeps the tune legible enough to dance to.
The horns come out as stacked solos rather than a band.: Name the sections and their relationship: “saxes state the theme, brass answers with punched accents, full-band shout chorus before the last head.” A prompt that merely lists instruments returns layered leads; a prompt that describes sectional call and response returns an arrangement.
