Style overview

Nothing in early hip-hop was built to be listened to at home. The tempo sits up near disco pace, the drums are somebody else's funk break rather than a programmed pattern, and the rhymes arrive in plain four-bar couplets the crowd is expected to finish. Two turntables and two copies of the same record turn four bars into an entire night, and the MC's job is simply to keep the floor moving. Everything the form later became is already present here, only faster and more sociable.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Typically 100–115 BPM — a notch quicker than later hip-hop and close to disco walking pace
Time signature: Straight 4/4 with the snare planted on the backbeat, the kick near one and three, and even eighth-note hats; the whole track is one four-bar break extended by cutting between two turntables
Instrumentation: Looped funk breaks, syncopated electric bass, clavinet and horn stabs, early drum machine handclaps and cowbell; the scratch is played as an instrument in its own right
Vocals: MCing in a clear, unhurried cadence, built on call and response where the crowd finishes the line, with the mic passed between two or three voices
Song structure: No fixed verse-chorus. Four- and eight-bar blocks stack up, an announcement-style intro names the crew, and a stripped drums-only break is left open in the middle for the dancers

Use cases

Retro block-party sets and breaking battles, where the open drum break gives dancers a long enough window to work
Period pieces and advertising set in the early eighties — a scratch and a handclap date the scene without a line of narration
Event openers and launch warm-ups, since call and response hands the host something to work the room with
Skate and graffiti footage that wants energy without menace, sitting under picture rather than over it
Chant-along cues for arenas and campus promos, where the crowd needs a line it can pick up on first hearing

FAQ

How is old school different from boom bap?: Consecutive eras, opposite methods. Old school runs fast at 100–115 BPM over whole funk breaks and functions as party music; boom bap drops to 85–95 BPM, chops those same breaks apart and reassembles them, and its snare is drier and harder. Prompt “fast funk break loop, party MC” for one and “slow chopped drums, dusty snare” for the other.
What keeps a prompt from drifting into modern rap?: Rule out the two modern signatures by name: “no 808 sub bass, no triplet hi-hat rolls.” Then add period gear cues — “early eighties, funk break loop, electric bass, turntable scratches, handclaps” — and the model stops reaching for contemporary trap production.
How should the vocal be treated?: Not dry and modern. Ask for “room reverb on the vocal, light compression, a little clipping allowed,” and keep the delivery mid-paced with simple end rhyme. The period character comes from a live PA and tape; a heavily tuned, close-mic'd vocal erases it.
