Style overview

Melodic techno keeps the four-on-the-floor frame but hands attention back to harmony. Long pads move underneath, and a four- or eight-bar minor-key motif returns again and again, each time with a new timbre or an octave stacked on top. It usually runs 120–126 BPM, slower than club techno, and sits between the dance floor and the headphone listen.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Mostly 120–126 BPM, occasionally 128; the slower setting exists to give long notes and delay tails room to sound
Time signature: 4/4 with the kick on every beat, light offbeat hats and simple percussion; the groove is carried by the interlock of bass and pad rather than by the kit
Instrumentation: Analogue-flavoured pads and string layers underneath, a delayed arpeggiator or piano tone as the lead motif, an offbeat eighth-note bass, and a kit far cleaner than the industrial end of the genre
Vocals: Often a processed female sustain or a whispered line drenched in reverb and delay, used as another pad; lyrics rarely exceed a phrase or two, repeated as a hook of texture
Song structure: A clear emotional arc: setup, motif entry, a breakdown with the kick removed, a return with the melody an octave higher, then a wind-down — usually across six to eight minutes

Use cases

Sunset sets at outdoor and beachside parties
The rising section of car commercials and brand films
Aerial and wide shots in travel video
Exploration and cutscenes in open-world games
The demanding final stretch of a yoga or pilates class

FAQ

How is this different from progressive house?: The tempos overlap, so listen to the low end and the harmony. Progressive house uses a rounder bass, full chord voicings and often a sung chorus. Melodic techno hovers on one or two chords for minutes at a time with a thin, offbeat bass. Specifying “two-chord loop, no chorus” separates them cleanly.
How do I prompt for the emotional build?: Give bar numbers: “drums and bass only for 32 bars, arpeggio motif enters at bar 33, kick drops for a breakdown at bar 65, kick returns at bar 97 with the melody an octave up.” Concrete positions produce a shape; the phrase gradual build does not.
My melodies come out too sweet.: Restrict the scale to natural minor or Dorian and rule out major triads, then ask for “dark pad tone, no bright plucks, motif of four notes or fewer.” Sweetness is usually caused by note count and bright synth timbres, so removing notes fixes it faster than changing the genre word.
