- Is dub the same as reggae?
- Dub is reggae's instrumental remix offshoot, not a separate origin. It breaks reggae's lineup apart, strips the vocal to fragments, and uses tape echo and drop-outs to push drums and bass front and center. Reggae is a song; dub is the song after subtractive remixing. For dub write "strip vocals, tape echo, drop-outs, drums and bass lead."
- How do I write the drop-out spaces in a prompt?
- Write "every two bars, whole part groups drop out instantly leaving only drums or bass, tape echo filling the gap," not a vague "atmospheric." Dub's space comes from parts being precisely pulled, and "atmosphere" alone gets a synth pad bed. Dub's tension is the removal, not the layering.
- The echo isn't enough — it sounds like plain instrumental reggae. Why?
- Make echo the lead: "long-feedback tape echo, vocal fragments triggering long delay, spring reverb bouncing in the drum gaps, bass and drums always present." Half of dub's identity is the echo feedback, and the tool's default restraint flattens it. Asking explicitly for long feedback and fragment triggering is what gets that bouncing-around feel.
