Style overview

Deathcore runs death metal's growls and blast beats through hardcore's breakdown logic. Tunings go lower, riffs turn more chromatic, and sections are punctuated by extremely slow slams that land the impact. It is more extreme than metalcore in a specific way: there is no clean chorus, the vocals alternate between guttural lows and high shrieks, and the structural drive comes from swings in intensity rather than from melodic hooks.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Fast passages mostly 160–220 BPM, with slams and breakdowns dropping to a 60–80 BPM feel
Time signature: 4/4 as the base, with breakdowns leaning on dotted and triplet figures to displace the accents; blast beats and half-time hits trade constantly
Instrumentation: Seven- or eight-string guitars tuned very low, riffing on muted low-position figures and chromatic slides; often distorted bass; double kick and blast beats throughout, with slams locking the lowest string to china cymbal hits
Vocals: Deep guttural growls alternating with high shrieks, essentially no clean singing; lyrics deal in violent imagery, horror and apocalypse
Song structure: An intensity curve replaces a melodic one — fast passage, deceleration, slam, acceleration again — with several extreme switches inside a three to four minute track

Use cases

Final bosses and chase sequences in horror games
Maximum-intensity training segments
Impact points in thriller and apocalyptic screen work
Climax reels in esports broadcasts
Short passages needing instant oppressive pressure

FAQ

How does deathcore differ from metalcore?: Vocals and chorus. Metalcore has a clean singable chorus and tonal, harmonized riffs. Deathcore almost never sings clean, alternates growls and shrieks, riffs more chromatically at lower tunings, and takes its breakdowns slower and heavier. Metalcore has hooks; deathcore has intensity.
What makes a slam different from a normal breakdown?: A slam is slower, sparser and lands its accents later, usually under a short growled phrase. Prompt slam section, 60–70 BPM feel, one heavy hit every two beats, guitar on the lowest string only, china cymbal locked to each hit.
What goes wrong most often when generating it?: The low end turns to mush. Eight-string guitar and distorted bass overlap heavily, so specify that bass and guitar are split by frequency: guitar keeps midrange grain, bass owns everything below 80 Hz, kick with a defined click. Otherwise the breakdown becomes a low-frequency blur with no perceptible impact.
