Style overview

Contemporary R&B plugs the tradition of R&B singing into modern electronic production: drums are programmed, 808 sub-bass replaces the played bass, and vocals arrive precisely tuned under stacked harmony. It runs cooler and more restrained than classic R&B, communicating feeling through texture and space rather than release.

Sound characteristics

Tempo: Mostly 60–95 BPM, often carrying a half-time looseness
Time signature: 4/4 with programmed, densely syncopated drums and a snare deliberately placed behind the beat
Instrumentation: 808 sub-bass and synth pads as the frame with electric piano for color; few layers, placed precisely, with space left audible
Vocals: Forward and audibly tuned, alternating breath and falsetto; choruses stack multi-track harmony into a silk finish
Song structure: Verse and chorus at the core with an improvised ad-lib section after the final chorus; compact, with few long interludes

FAQ

How does contemporary R&B differ from classic R&B?: Production method. Classic R&B works with a live band, powerful vocals and emotion worn openly. Contemporary R&B frames everything around programmed drums and 808s, with more restrained vocals, tighter tuning and more space than fill. One runs hot; the other runs cool.
How do I stop it turning into a pop song?: Insist on three things: tempo under 90 BPM, syncopated drums with a laid-back snare, and harmony built on sevenths and ninths. Pop's square rhythms and plain triads erase R&B's looseness and its expensive finish the moment they appear.
What should I specify for the vocal?: Write "forward vocal alternating breath and falsetto, stacked multi-track harmony in the chorus, ad-libs after the final chorus." The expressive weight of the style lives in vocal detail, and without naming it systems tend to return a flat pop delivery.
