- How does it differ from ambient music?
- By whether there is a beat. Ambient generally has no defined kit and sustains itself through slowly changing timbre; chillout has a clear pulse at 90–110 BPM that simply refuses to push. Choose ambient for background with no rhythm at all, chillout when a little motion helps.
- What tends to go wrong when generating it?
- The rhythm gets too much forward drive and the result reads as slow dance music. Adding "no emphasis on the kick, no riser or drop, narrow dynamic range, one intensity held throughout" pushes it back into the background where it belongs.
- How is it different from downtempo?
- They overlap heavily. By convention chillout emphasizes the functional quality of relaxation, with softer and brighter arranging, while downtempo emphasizes the musical quality of slowness, often with heavier low end and hip-hop-derived breaks. Pick the first for atmosphere, the second for groove.
